    Undergraduate major

    requirements for a major or a double major in WMST

    THE MAJOR IN WOMEN'S AND GENDER STUDIES

    Students may declare a Women's and Gender Studies major through the College of Arts & Sciences. To declare your major, please see your Academic Adviser in the Steele Building (966-5116). If additional information is needed, please contact the Department of Women's and Gender Studies at 962-3908 or come by Room 208 Smith Building.  Students are encouraged to consult regularly with members of the Women’s Studies faculty for advising. Call 962-3908.

    The major requires twenty-four (24) credit hours of Women's and Gender Studies courses or courses cross-listed* with Women’s and Gender Studies (courses not listed below must be approved by the Director of Undergraduate Studies [DUS] or the Chair to count toward major requirements).  These credit hours must be distributed as follows:

    1. I. Foundations: 12 credits (all four courses are required)
      1. WMST 101 -- Introduction to Women’s Studies
      2. WMST 202– Introduction to Feminist Thought (101 and sophomore standing or higher required)
      3. WMST 695/695H -- Senior Capstone Seminar: Principles of Feminist Inquiry (offered during the Fall semester only)
        1. One course on “Minority/Third World/Non-Western” Women/Gender chosen from the following:

    D.AAAD/WMST 261, 266, 285, 430; AAAD 569/HIST 569/WMST 569; ANTH 440/WMST 440; ASIA 381/WMST 381; COMM 561/WMST 561; ENGL/WMST 665, 666; HIST/WMST 280, 537, 576; JAPN 384/WMST 384; PLAN 662/WMST 662; WMST 211, 233, 237, 365, 368, 281, 289, 293, 388; 410

    Courses with temporary numbers [WMST 089 (FYS) and WMST 290 (Special Topics)] can be used to fulfill this requirement when the specific topic is appropriate; students will need to see the Director of Undergraduate Studies for approval.

     

    1. II. Interdisciplinary Perspectives:  9 credits chosen from courses listed below (and course listed in D. above that has not been used to fill that requirement). The courses must be distributed among at least two of the following three perspective groups: Historical, Humanities and Fine Arts, and Social Sciences.  Courses not listed here* must be approved by the Chair or DUS in order to count toward the major.

    1. III. Theory and Practice of Women's and Gender Studies:   3 credits selected from one of the following options:**
    2. WMST 391 -- Practicum/Internship (WMST 101 and 202, prior approval of a faculty adviser, and completion of a contract by the end of the previous semester are required)
    3. WMST 695H and 691 -- Honors Thesis (senior-standing, eligibility for honors, two-semester commitment, completion of a contract by the end of the previous semester, and prior approval of faculty adviser and Chair are required)
    4. A fourth 3-credit course from any one of the three “perspectives” (use the lists above)***

    Double Majors: no more than 11 credit hours can be counted towards both majors.

    *Because there has been a moratorium on cross-listing, there are a number of courses not cross-listed that could fulfill a requirement.  Majors must bring a syllabus and course description to get written approval from the WMST DUS and/or the WMST Chair to have a non-cross listed course (or any course not listed here) accepted for a major requirement.

    **Students who entered UNC in 2012 or later will not be able to use an independent study to fulfill this requirement (unless they have written permission from the Department Chair).

    ***Available to students who entered UNC in the Fall of 2012 or later or with special permission from the DUS or Chair.
